Samurai Rugby

When you think of Samurai you think Sevens it is as associated as Salt & Pepper and Fish and Chips... you just don’t have one without the other. The international renowned invitation team Samurai has travelled the globe spreading the philosophy of sevens rugby ensuring the game is played in attractive highly skilled manner whilst ensuring the essence of rugby and sevens in terms of enjoyment spirit and values are upheld. The world of sevens is a far reaching community of “rugby mad” individuals who lived to see the skills of the game of rugby which are able to be magnified in the 7’s game whilst off the pitch there is always a party and the circuit always follows the sun!!

History of the Name:

Samurai Rugby was founded in 1996 when Terry Sands, the current manager of The England Sevens Team, was invited to enter a team into the 25th anniversary of the Amsterdam Sevens.

Terry had been working in South Africa during the World Cup of 1995 and had greatly admired the spirit and perseverance shown by the Japanese Team. They had lacked the physical requirements for 15-a-side rugby on such a big stage but were passionate, adventurous and always willing “to think outside the box”. It was these attributes that became the inspiration for the name behind his invitation team – The Samurai.

'My own high point in Sevens was Managing the England team at the 2006 CWG in Melbourne.

The Samurai Team’s most memorable victory was when we beat the Penguins in the final of the 2004 Lisbon 7s.

The Samurai Teams best achievement was winning the Amsterdam sevens last year making it a record of 8 victories with the last 4 victories being consecutive…..'
