Coaching vision drills for 7s rugby

Having the vision to know when to pass, who to pass to and when to run with the ball is a key skill to play sevens rugby. The extra space on a sevens pitch exaggerates the benefits of this skill and developing this ability is important for any player novice to professional. To help develop this skill I’ve listed a couple of training games to encourage players to scan the pitch and use their vision to take advantage of what’s in front of them. The games start easy and get progressively harder in both physical endurance and skill level needed.

Netball

To play this game you need to mark to small areas roughly 20 meters apart from each other. The exact distance should vary depending on the number of players. Pick two equal teams. Each team needs to successfully pass the ball into the opposition’s marked area. The defending team should attempt to preventing the team passing the ball. This is a non-contact game so players shouldn’t tackle each other and if a player stops with the ball the defending team should keep 1 meter from the opposition trying to prevent a successful pass. The ball can be passed in any direction so there is no offside. Don’t worry too much about the space used the idea is to keep it open and expansive.

You can progress the difficulty of this game by the following means:

Easy: Players shouldn’t run with the ball. The supporting players should move to an area free from oppositions so a pass can be made.

Medium: Players can run 5 strides with the ball before they need to pass. If they run too far it should be a turn over and possession given to the opposition.

Hard: No limit on how far players can run with the ball. This should be a higher intensity game so if play slows down with too many players close together you could re-start the game giving possession to the other team. You could even give press ups sit ups or sprints during the game to mix in some fitness.

Ring of fire

This is a slightly harder game as it pushes players out of their usual comfort zone. The pitch is made up of a small marked area in the center roughly 5 – 10 meters squared. And at least double the space, outside the area. You’ll need two teams, the defenders to start inside the area and the opposition to stand anywhere outside the area. Start the game by kicking or throwing the ball out from the center. The attacking team need to collect the ball passing between themselves until they can run or pass the ball successfully into the marker area without being touched. The defenders can go as soon as you release the ball. You can vary the intensity of the game from starting with the defenders touching the attackers to signify a tackle, to full on contact. To vary the difficulty vary the number of defenders to attackers. Start with for example 3 defenders to 7 attackers and increase the number of defenders till you have equal teams.
