Scottish 7s drill - Colin Gregor

Colin Gregor Scotland 7s

Name: Colin Gregor

Teams: Scotland 7s, Glasgow Warriors

Coaching Drill:

This drill focuses on your awareness to spot weak defenders. However it also works your passing, movement and can be used for conditioning too.

Start with 7 players on the goal line. Depending on the number of players you can have either 2 or 3 lines of defence. If using 3, place the first line of defenders along the half way, the second along the 22m line and the third on the try line. Again dependent on numbers teach defensive line can consist of 3 or 4 players. If using 4 players, have 3 of them in the same colour bib and one of them in a different colour bib.

Aim: the attacking team have to attack the odd coloured bib as if he is a weak defender. The defensive line decide where to place that player. The line on the half way line and far 22m line can change their player’s position as the attacking team attacks the line ahead. If the attacking team are touched by a defender other than the ‘odd one out’ they have to set up a contact and play from there to attack the next line. Defenders stay pretty much on their line.

On the above pitch, the attackers would attack the nearest red player highlighted in the circle first of all. Having attacked past him, they then have to realign and move the ball to attack the red player in the second line as shown below. To do this they can use cuts, loops or just hands but try and avoid one player running too far across the pitch to attack the defender.  Having attacked the player in the second line they would then attack the try line picking out the red player. To add an element of conditioning to it, the same seven an attack for repeat lengths, allowing them time to reset at either end before attacking again. Each time they attack, the defenders alter the position of the ‘odd one out’. You can progress the drill by starting the attackers from a set piece. But they still have to attack the correct coloured bib.
